Event examines issues facing gay seniors
Pamela Jones didn't think the day would come when there would be a conference in Charlotte to highlight the needs of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (GLBT) community. Much less one to address the needs of aging GLBT people.
Thirty years ago, Jones lived most of the week as a man and as what was then referred to as a crossdresser on the weekends. He was often afraid for his safety. "In the '70s it wasn't safe to leave the house," said Jones, 65.
This week, the Centralina Area Agency on Aging will host "Gay and Gray, " a conference at the Levine Jewish Community Center to discuss issues facing members of the GLBT community as they age, and how organizations and facilities for older adults can be sensitive to this population and their needs. The conference is Tuesday and Wednesday.
"We like to think that times have changed, but they haven't totally, and that's why this conference is so important," Jones said. The community organizer will give a workshop for medical professionals on how to be sensitive to the GLBT community. See Event examines issues facing gay seniors
