Documentary Focuses On Southern Gay Life
In director Jason Ball's documentary Out Of The South, six gay men – Jason, Shane, Troy, Keven, Michael and Glenn – share a traditional Southern Sunday dinner – "Los Angeles gay style."
What begins as an homage to the South – "I love everything about the South," says Shane – soon fades as the men share traumatic tales of their lives growing up gay in the South.
Ball's allegiance to champion Southern culture – faith, family and food – soon feels forced and disingenuous in light of the repressive, anti-gay stories shared around the dinner table.

The South?
Sometimes I think that after the civil war, we had another war to fight that we failed to fight. It should have been a war to destroy the infrastructure of bigotry, racism, and now we see, hatred of gay people. It's modern incarnation is the Southern Baptists, along with some of the independent right wing christian churches.
When they influence so much of the south, they should be held accountble for their crimes, which include by proxy the induced suicide of so many young gay people. Take away their tax exemption, and bring them to trial. Religion cannot get a free ride with hatred, a lesson we should have learned from another religion filled with hatred in its ultraconservative sects, that gave us 9/11.
