Gay bishop reflects on a difficult journey

In 2003, New Hampshire's Gene Robinson became the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church, a move that is still having repercussions.

Five years later, Robinson's election has brought the greater Anglican Communion – of which the U.S. church is a part – to the breaking point. On Sunday, conservative Anglican leaders threatened to leave the worldwide church over the issue of homosexuality.

Robinson will make his first visit to the Sacramento area July 1 and 2. He'll meet with church leaders, clergy and the public.

In a phone interview with The Bee, the bishop talked about the upcoming conference of Anglican leaders, his recent civil union with his partner and his new book, "In the Eye of the Storm: Swept to the Center by God" (Seabury Books, $25, 176 pages). See  Gay bishop reflects on a difficult journey
