Banners tout gay-pride festival on Main Street
Gay Pride banners went up on Lexington's Main Street for the first time Friday, a prelude to downtown's first public celebration of Lexington's gay community.
”It is just one of the many ways to be public and let people know we are here,“ said Mary Crone, one of the festival organizers.
The 14 blue banners feature the words ”Lexington Pride“ written across a rainbow, a longtime symbol of the gay-pride movement. They promote the Lexington Pride Festival, scheduled for June 28. Most of the banners are on Main Street between Broadway and Upper Street and will remain there until June 30, when they will be replaced by banners celebrating the Fourth of July.
For at least 20 years, Lexington's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender residents had held an annual gathering, Crone said, but until this year, it has been held on various private farms.
