Right wing attacks 'Dear Abby'

As this morning’s Washington Times reports, right wing activists are attacking ‘Dear Abby,’ the world’s most widely-read advice columnist, for having the audacity to suggest that, among other things, parents should love their lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender children. One conservative activist tells the Times that Abby “is a disciple of the sexual revolution,” and offers up “radical advice.”

That “radical advice,” of course, includes suggesting that same-sex couples should enjoy the same rights as their heterosexual neighbors, and that LGBT kids should be loved just as much as anyone else. What could be more pro-family, after all, than advising your readers to love every member of their family?

PFLAG was proud to honor ‘Dear Abby’ with our inaugural Straight for Equality Award, and we’re grateful to her for referring parents and relatives to PFLAG when a loved one comes out. And, as we pointed out to the Times this morning, “She gives her readers practical advice about real-world issues.”

Her nay-sayers, meanwhile, don’t seem to live in the real world at all.
