Ga. House special election draws crowded field
Georgia Equality endorses Dawkins-Haigler in May 13 vote Whoever wins the seat vacated by former state Rep. Ron Sailor after he was caught in a federal money laundering sting may have to win an election every month for the next four months before securing the job longterm.
Five Democrats are on the ballot for a May 13 special election to fill out the remainder of Sailors’ term, likely followed by a runoff June 10. Sailor, also a Democrat, represented House District 93, which includes parts of DeKalb and Rockdale counties.
In order to win the seat for a full term, the winner of the May 13 special election will likely face at least the top performers again in the Democratic primary on July 15, potentially followed by another runoff Aug. 5. No Republicans qualified for that race by press time.
Since Sailor left office during an election year, there must be a special election to fill out the remainder of his term this year. The vote is one of 40 state-level contests Georgia Equality hopes to impact.
The state’s largest gay lobbying group has endorsed Dee Dawkins-Haigler, a political strategist and minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, for House District 93.
