Gay couples can marry in Canada - but not in an Anglican Church; Priest Disciplined For Performing Gay Marriage Ceremony
A priest in the Anglican diocese of Ontario has been stripped of his license to marry after officiating at the wedding of a same-sex couple.
Rev. Michael Bury, rector of St. John the Evangelist Church in Stirling, about 115 miles east of Toronto, conducted the ceremony in August, reports the Anglican Journal on its website.
Diocesan Bishop George Bruce told the Journal in an interview that the cancellation is effective until further notice.
``I had issued a directive in 2003 that we would not bless same-sex relationships nor conduct marriages,'' said Bruce. ``There was no canonical permission to do it. There are consequences (to such an action).''
